Chilean Flamingos like living in groups called flocks. These flocks may be made up of thousands of birds. They spend a great deal of their day feeding, cleaning and waterproofing their feathers (preening). The Chilean Flamingo’s ankle is halfway up its leg.

Habitat

Chilean Flamingos are found in South America - Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. They live in shallow, salty lakes with no vegetation.

Diet

Chilean Flamingos feed on water plants (algae) and shrimp that contain a red pigment (carotenoid), which gives them their pink colouring. They are filter feeders. Chilean Flamingos bills act like strainers, sorting out their food.
