Their slender bill is used to probe into shallow water, mud or grass when foraging. Similar to flamingos, the red colour of their plumage comes from carotene found in the crustaceans they eat.

Natural Habitat

They are found in the Northern third of South America where they live in a number of aquatic habitats, such as swamps, shallow lakes, and anthropogenic wetlands.

Diet

Crabs and other crustaceans, small fish, mollusks, frogs, worms and insects.
