Greater Egyptian Jerboa
Scientific Name: Jaculas orientailis
Did you know?
Jerboas are highly nocturnal and stay in their burrows during the heat of the day waiting for the temperature to reduce so they can emerge to feed. If threatened by a predator while in their burrow they always have an emergency exit tunnel to escape through.
Habitat
Found in north Africa from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Can be found in humid coastal and salt semi-desert as well as subtropical shrubland, including rocky valleys and meadows.
Diet
They feed mainly on succulent roots, sprouting seeds, grain and sometimes on cultivated vegetables. They rarely drink, getting all the fluids they need from the plants they eat.
